The desperate mother entered the forbidden Akara sanctuary, where a priestess showed her the truth in a basin of water: at eighteen, consumed by jealousy over her stepmother and half-brother receiving all their father's love, Qyamaka had smothered the infant boy. Her stepmother swore a fiery curse: her children would never outlive her son's age. Qyamaka knelt before her stepmother for three days without food. When the stepmother finally whispered "I forgive you," the fever broke and Nuamaka survived. The tale teaches: forgiveness may be granted, but forgetting is impossible—guilt is a burden carried for life.
