Kind, hardworking Puti lived with her cruel stepmother and lazy stepsister Red Onion. When she accidentally washed her stepmother's precious silk scarf into the river, Puti ventured into the forest to find it. An old woman there gave her a task: work for a week. Puti did so earnestly and chose only a small pumpkin as her reward. Inside, she found gems and gold. Her greedy stepmother and stepsister tried to mimic her—they deliberately lost a scarf, treated the old woman rudely, and chose the largest pumpkin. When they cut it open, poisonous insects swarmed out, and they fled screaming, never to be seen again. The tale teaches: good deeds and contentment are rewarded; greed and malice devour their own.
