Mbok Sri, a lonely widow, longed for a child. A green giant gave her golden cucumber seeds, promising a daughter—but she must surrender the girl at seventeen. Desperate, she agreed. A girl was born from a golden cucumber, named Timun Mas, and grew up kind and diligent. As her seventeenth year neared, Mbok Sri sought help from a hermit, who gave Timun Mas four pouches containing cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and shrimp paste. When the giant came to claim her, Timun Mas fled, scattering her gifts to sprout cucumber fields, bamboo forests, oceans, and boiling mud—each obstacle slowed the giant until he was swallowed by the mud. Mother and daughter lived safely ever after. The tale teaches: think before making promises, and courage, wit, and love can overcome all obstacles.
